Making Space Unexpected: The Art of Flexibility in a Rigid World

9 November 2025

There’s a quote I often think about: “Structure is freedom.” It sounds contradictory, but if you work in property management—especially in supportive housing—you know exactly what it means.

Every morning, I build a plan. I go through my calendar, add in my own reminders, and sip coffee while reading the New York Times. That little ritual helps me feel centered before the flood of calls and messages begins. But by 8:30 a.m., all bets are off.

The work we do is real-time and unpredictable. Emergencies don’t wait for your schedule to clear. And in this line of work, a missed call can mean a missed opportunity to help someone stay housed.

So I plan with a mindset of agility. I work through lunch. I take public transportation so I can read emails during my commute. And I always leave space—mentally and logistically—for the unscheduled.

Is it exhausting? Sometimes, yes. But when you care about the work, when you know the stakes, you find your rhythm in the chaos. And on the rare days when everything does go to plan? That’s just icing on the cake.
